there. but first our top story live here at 5:30 a.m. at 30 rock in new york city. and we begin with the latest on the rapidly approaching fiscal cliff deadline of automatic tax hikes on everybody and what appears to be a stalemate in the negotiations. in his first interview since the election, president obama reiterated his demand that any deal must raise taxes on the highest earner. yesterday obama also appeared to showroom for flexibility on actually relowering those tax rates in the future. >> i don't think that the issue right now has to do with sitting in a room. the issue right now that's relevant is the acknowledgement that if we're going to raise revenues that are sufficient to balance with the very tough cuts that we've already made and the further reforms and entitlements that i'm prepared to make, that we're going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up. and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. p what i've suggested is let's essentially put a down payment on taxes. let's let tax rates on the upper income folks go up. and then let's set up a proce

to the news live at 5:30 here at 30 rock in new york city. this morning, president obama departs to pennsylvania where he will continue his campaign sales pitch on how to solve the country's fiscal challenges. yesterday treasury secretary tim geithner met with republicans to unveil the white house's budget proposal which includes $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue over ten years as well as $50 billion in additional stimulus spending. with limited details on spending cuts, the gop's reaction, less than encouraging. senator mitch mcconnell reportedly burst into laughter while geithner was in the middle of outlining obama's plan. and house speaker john boehner who described his phone call with the president wednesday night as disappointing was not impressed by the white house proposal. >> no substantive progress has been made in the talks between the white house and the house over the last two weeks. right now all eyes are on the white house. the country doesn't need a victory lap. it needs leadership. it's time for the president and congressional democrats to tell the american people

toward really slimming down citi by the new ceo. he has a quote in here saying these actions are logical next steps in citi's transformation and says they're committed to strategy that continues to leverage in the global banking market. if you go through the list of where these jobs are actually coming from, institutional clients group which is investment banking a quarter of the job cuts are going to come from there. my 2013 predictions i said that group would slim down by half. interesting that they are cutting a big chunk of that group. global consumer banking is responsible for 35% of the cuts and then going on through the other business lines like citi holdings, those are responsible for smaller portion of those jobs. citi getting smaller. a billion dollars going to be the pretax charge in the fourth quarter of next year. 11,000 jobs a big move from the new ceo over there. carl? >> all right. thank you very much, kayla. we're reading through the release right now ourselves. big strategic move. >> how many people work at this bank? i feel like they've been firing forever. citi did no
